Notes 26th October: Decided to drastically simplify my plans for mum's quilt. The thoughts for Terpsichorean are just not practical enough for a quilt which is destined to be used to cover a much used chair. Decided to use squares of differing sizes and will call this one "Square Dance".Each block is 8inches across, unfinished size.27th October: Got quite a lot done yesterday. Decided to add a second colourway and play around with the blocks. The current design has a blue diagonal line of squares. So far I have one complete row sewn together and a second almost finished. It will be interesting to see how much I can get completed today. (I shall be out this afternoon and for the evening...)6th November: The basic structure of the top is now complete, the pieces just need assembling. The fourth photo shows the pieces ontop of the backing fleece. I need to add some brighter highlight pieces to heighten the overall colour. 21st November: After a couple of weeks not being able to work on this top, I managed to get most of the base fabric for the design all sewn together. Next task will be adding the smaller pieces.25th November: Most of today has been spent getting the little pieces sorted out and ironed onto the main pieces of the top. I left this in two pieces to start with to make this process easier. All the little bits have bondaweb on the back so I can iron them in place ready for stitching. The bigger loose squares have strips of bondaweb so I could tack them in place using the iron. Hopefully this will mean less pins to spike me. Next task is to sew the two big pieces together and then add the smaller pieces which cross from one side to the other. The last two photos show the pieces prior to ironing every bit together. The last is also a close-up of the lettering. Yes, you are seeing footprints.4th December: Stitching all the little bits into place ready for basting the whole thing and quilting.21st December: Finally got all the top stitching finished. Why so long? I lost confidence and got fed up with it all, so prevaricated for rather too long. However, I did get other projects finished..........The last photo shows the top stitching under way with some of the larger letters.22nd December: Finally got to the putting everything together stage yesterday only to find that my piece of fleece is too short for the quilt top! Idiotic thing for me to do. Never mind. It is easily remedied. I have a lovely remnant of cream fleece which I shall add to each end. Discovered I could sew this on using a three thread flatlock using my serger. That way there is little added bulk.I have also pieced together some Thermore wadding to add a little warmth to the quilt. It probably doesn't really need it, but I'd like my mum to be cosy when she eventually gets to use this quilt.Late afternoon update: Finally decided to discard the Thermore. I can always use it on another project. Quilt now pinned ready for basting.24th December: Finally got the quilting started yesterday.28th December: Still quilting.................... Hope to be finished by the time mum arrives on New Years Eve.30th December: Completed the quilting last night. Binding to do today. I have already tidied up the edges ready to have the binding sewn on. Now to prepare the binding itself. I am using offcuts from the fabric used in the quilt itself.31st December: Completed handstitching the binding in place. (I attached it all by machine, then folded and handstitched.) Photos later. Handed the quilt over to my mum this evening. She was really pleased with it. Didn't take photos since the light was not good. Should be able to take some later this week.9th January 2011: Finally got my photos of teh finished quilt. It now lives on mum's favourite chair and is ready to be snuggled into whenever she needs it. She tells me that it has been admired by her next door neighbour who came in to see it.Oh, I never did explain the name. It is called "Square Dance" for two reasons. Firstly, the design is basically squares although the pieces move about quite a lot. The second reason is that mum teaches English Country Dance twice a month at the age of almost 82. Its a good class too. I enjoy going along as often as I can.tags:
