I thought this pattern would be a good base for Balalaika, from Black Lagoon. Her coat differs slightly, in that it doesn't have the belts on the waist of sleeves, and it has the buttons sewn on either side (like other 'fake' double-breasted coats). Having made the finished coat, I do feel that it would be better if the lapels were a bit smaller, and lower down, but as I'd never properly made a jacket with lapels before, I'm glad I had this pattern to follow rather than making it from scratch!
It's made from khaki green Melton wool mix, which I absolutely love! I want to make more things from Melton now. It's really warm too.
The only actual problem I've not yet had the time to solve is the sleeve lining – whenever I stitch them in, it causes the outer sleeves to bunch up. I hope to fix this before I next wear the costume again.
The military accessories are attached by safety pins, which I've hot-glued in place. |
